The midday sun beat down on the training grounds, a relentless golden hammer forging the very air into a shimmering haze. Sweat slicked my skin, clinging to my tunic like a second skin, and the usual triumphant roar of my victories was absent, replaced by a hollow echo in my own ears. Something was off. Not just the usual friction with Onyx Vale, that was a constant, a predictable storm I navigated with practiced ease. This was different. This was… a tremor.
My gaze kept drifting, against my will, to where Onyx was sparring with Kael. The way the moonlight, even filtered through the harsh daylight, seemed to cling to him, a subtle sheen on his dark hair, a coolness in his movements that belied the heat of the day. It was infuriating. He was always so… composed. So infuriatingly in control. And lately, that control held a new kind of allure, a quiet intensity that gnawed at the edges of my usual bravado.
“Focus, Gabe!” Kael’s voice, sharp and laced with impatience, jolted me back. He parried my clumsy lunge with a flick of his wrist, his eyes narrowed. “You’re drifting. What’s eating you?”
