The air tasted wrong. It was a subtle thing at first, like a forgotten note in a familiar song, but it gnawed at the edges of my awareness. The sun, Xime’s domain, seemed to struggle, its usual fierce brilliance muted, its rays like weak tea poured over the land. Even at noon, the shadows stretched too long, clinging to buildings and trees with an unnatural tenacity. A chill, not of season, had begun to creep into the world, a cold that sunk deeper than bone.

“It’s getting worse,” Xime stated, his voice a low growl beside me. We stood on the highest parapet of the old observatory, a place that had once been a battleground for our glares and shouted insults. Now, it was a vantage point, a silent testament to how much things had shifted. He gestured with a hand that, even now, seemed to hold a faint, contained warmth. “The light… it’s receding. Not just the sun setting, Onyx. It’s like the world is holding its breath, waiting for something to snatch it away.”

I nodded, my gaze sweeping over the horizon. The usual vibrant tapestry of the sky was smudged, greying at the edges. A peculiar stillness had fallen over the city below, a hush that felt less like peace and more like dread. The birds, usually a raucous symphony, were silent. Even the wind seemed to whisper instead of roar. “The Deity,” I murmured, the name a cold weight in my mouth. “They’re making their move.”
