It was the kind of quiet that precedes a storm, or perhaps, something far worse. Xime, ever the beacon of outward confidence, even in the face of this unsettling stillness, shifted beside me. His usual vibrant energy seemed muted, a dimmer ember than I was accustomed to. We stood on the precipice of the Whispering Peaks, a place where the wind usually sang ancient tales, but now, it merely sighed, a mournful breath against our skin.

“This… this feels wrong, Onyx,” Xime murmured, his voice barely a whisper, yet it cut through the oppressive quiet. He kept his gaze fixed on the horizon, where the sky seemed to bleed into an unnatural, bruised purple.

I nodded, my own unease a cold knot in my stomach. “It’s more than wrong, Xime. It’s like the world is holding its breath. Like something is about to shatter.” My fingers, usually cool to the touch, felt clammy. Even the faint moonlight that dared to peek through the encroaching gloom felt… weaker. Thinner.
