The sprite, a shimmering knot of emerald and amethyst light, watched Leo with eyes like chips of obsidian. Its initial amusement had curdled into a sharp, almost petulant frustration. Leo, bless his determined little heart, was proving far more resilient than the sprite had anticipated. He wasn’t succumbing to the dizzying pull of the endless climb, nor was he entirely swayed by the sprite’s honeyed words. Still, the sprite was nothing if not persistent. It would not allow such a promising chance to feed on regret to slip through its flickering fingers.

As Leo continued his ascent, the air grew thicker, the colors of the wisps more intense, swirling around him like a kaleidoscope gone wild. The phantom Leo’s voice, a thin, reedy sound, echoed, “I never wanted you!” Leo flinched, the raw pain of that moment, so long buried, threatening to overwhelm him. He squeezed his eyes shut, chanting to himself, “It’s not real. It’s just an echo. Just an echo.” When he opened them, the illusion had dissolved, leaving only the familiar, swirling colors of the staircase.
