The air, thick and shimmering with the colors of a half-remembered sunset, pressed in on Leo. Each step he took on the spiraling thermal stair was a breath held, a question whispered into the echoing void. He’d thought the wisps were just pretty, fleeting things, like dandelion fluff caught in a sunbeam. But now, as he paused, the vibrant hues coalescing around him, he understood. One, a swirling emerald, pulsed near his ear, and he heard, not with his ears, but deep within his mind, the sound of a scraped knee, the sharp intake of breath, the comforting murmur of his mother’s voice. Another, a fierce crimson, flared, and he felt a surge of childish anger, a slammed door, a slammed heart.
