Leo blinked, his eyes adjusting to the familiar, dusty light of the attic. The air, once thick with the scent of forgotten things and the strange, sweet perfume of the thermal stairs, now smelled simply of old wood and dry paper. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the rough, unvarnished planks where the glowing ascent had been. Nothing. The staircase, the wisps, the mischievous sprite – all gone, as if they had been a dream spun from the attic’s own shadows.

He descended the pull-down stairs, each creak a familiar sound, a comforting counterpoint to the ethereal whispers he’d grown accustomed to. His feet touched the solid floor of his bedroom, and a wave of normalcy washed over him. Yet, it wasn't the same normalcy as before. The colors of his room, the blue of his bedspread, the warm yellow of his desk lamp, seemed somehow more vibrant, more *real*. He walked to his window, pushing aside the curtains. The sun, a brilliant, unwavering orb, shone down on his backyard. It wasn't the shimmering, fractured light that had filtered through the misty, colorful heights of the thermal stair, but a steady, grounding warmth. He saw his swing set, the familiar oak tree, his dog, Buster, chasing a butterfly with clumsy enthusiasm. Before, these sights might have seemed ordinary, even a little dull. Now, they held a quiet magic, a testament to the world he had returned to, the world he had fought to understand.
