Leo blinked, his eyes adjusting to the familiar, dusty light of the attic. Gone were the swirling, vibrant colors, the dizzying descent of the thermal stair. The air, once thick with the scent of forgotten memories and the hum of countless whispered echoes, was now still and ordinary. He reached out a hand, expecting to feel the cool, smooth surface of a glowing step, but his fingers met only the rough, splintered wood of the attic floorboards. The staircase, the impossible, endless staircase that had held him captive, had vanished as if it had never been.
A strange quiet settled over him, a silence that was both a relief and a pang of something akin to loss. He was back. Back in the attic, back in the ordinary world, with the faint smell of old books and mothballs. But he wasn't the same Leo who had pushed open that hidden door. The adventure, the journey through the swirling hues of his own past, had etched itself onto his soul.
He walked towards the small window, the afternoon sun streaming through the grimy glass, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the air. It was a simple scene, one he’d witnessed countless times. Yet, today, it felt different. The sunlight seemed brighter, the dust motes like tiny, incandescent sprites, each carrying a flicker of a memory, a fleeting emotion. He no longer saw them as just dust; he saw them as echoes, as whispers of moments that had shaped him.
