The air grew thick, not with dust, but with a strange, cloying sweetness, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. Leo, his breath catching in his chest, saw it then. Before him, where the staircase had twisted and turned, a new path shimmered into existence. It wasn't a continuation of the glowing steps he had grown accustomed to; this was a vision of solid ground, bathed in a light so warm and inviting it felt like being wrapped in his grandmother’s favorite quilt. A path of polished, sun-drenched wood stretched out, leading to a sun-drenched meadow dotted with wildflowers, and beyond that, the hazy, familiar outline of his own house, bathed in the golden glow of a perfect afternoon.

It was an escape. A real, tangible escape.

He heard a giggle, light as dandelion fluff, and turned to see the sprite perched on the railing of the now-fading, colorful staircase. Its eyes, usually dancing with mischief, held a peculiar, almost desperate gleam. “See?” it chirped, its voice laced with a false sweetness. “I told you there was another way. A much, much better way. No more climbing, no more confusing whispers. Just home. Just peace.”
