Chapter 7
Sarah's Nightmares
Sarah is plagued by unsettling dreams, fragments of memory and premonition. She feels a gnawing guilt, replaying Chris's last moments, searching for a sign she missed.
The house, once a haven, had become a tomb of unanswered questions. Sarah moved through its rooms like a ghost, her own reflection in the darkened windows a stranger’s gaunt face. Sleep offered no solace, only a deeper descent into the labyrinth of her fear. Night after night, the dreams came, a relentless tide of fractured images and unspoken dread.
She saw Chris, his small hand tucked into hers, his bright eyes scanning the familiar path leading to the woods. He was pointing, his voice a distant echo, speaking of something he’d found, something “shiny.” But the dream always warped, the path dissolving into a tangled thicket, the sunlight dimming to a bruised twilight. And then, the Man. His face was a blur, a shadow with eyes that held an unsettling stillness, a quiet intensity that sent a shiver down her spine even in the dream. He was speaking to Chris, his voice a low murmur, a song of secrets. Chris looked at him, his head tilted, a child’s innocent curiosity battling an instinct Sarah couldn't decipher. Was he mesmerized? Enchanted? Or simply lost?
The guilt was a physical ache, a constant pressure behind her ribs. Had she missed something? Had she been too busy, too distracted, too… normal? She replayed their last morning together a thousand times. Chris had been restless, his usual boisterous energy muted. He’d been quieter than usual, his gaze often drifting towards the window, towards the beckoning green of the woods. She remembered him asking about the old oak tree at the edge of their property, the one with the gnarled branches that looked like reaching fingers. He’d wanted to explore, he’d said, to see if there were any “special stones” hidden among its roots. She’d brushed it off, preoccupied with a looming deadline at work, with the mundane anxieties of everyday life. "Later, honey," she'd said. "Maybe this weekend." A casual dismissal that now echoed like a death knell.
