Detective Miller arrived as the late afternoon sun began its slow descent, casting long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawns of Willow Creek. The air, usually alive with the chirping of birds and the distant hum of lawnmowers, now held a brittle silence, a collective breath held by a town teetering on the edge of panic.
