The air in the woods, usually alive with the rustle of leaves and the chirping of unseen birds, felt thick and suffocating. It had been two days since Chris vanished, two agonizing days punctuated by the hollow echo of his name tossed into the indifferent silence. Sarah and David, their faces etched with a grief so profound it seemed to have stolen their very breath, walked the perimeter of the woods again, their steps heavy with a despair that clung to them like the damp morning mist. Every snapped twig, every shadow that danced at the edge of their vision, sent a fresh wave of terror through them.

Detective Miller, his brow furrowed in concentration, moved with a practiced, almost detached efficiency. He’d seen too many desperate searches, too many parents consumed by the abyss of the unknown. Yet, there was something about Chris’s disappearance, a peculiar stillness that settled over the community, that pricked at his professional curiosity. It wasn’t the frantic panic of an accident; it was something colder, more deliberate.

David, his usual stoic demeanor cracking under the strain, kicked at a fallen branch. "There's nothing, Miller. We've scoured this place a dozen times. It's like he just… evaporated." His voice was rough, strained.
