The air in the small, makeshift command center buzzed with a nervous energy that had become a constant hum over the past three days. Coffee cups, cold and forgotten, littered the tables alongside crumpled maps and hastily scrawled notes. Detective Miller, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere lack of sleep, stared at the flickering screen of his laptop. The grainy footage from Mrs. Gable’s security camera, the one that had captured the last known image of Chris, played on repeat. The man, cloaked in anonymity, and the boy, a bright spark of innocence, walking towards the treeline. It was a scene seared into the minds of everyone involved.

Then, the radio crackled. A voice, rough with exhaustion and excitement, cut through the tense silence. “Dispatch, this is Officer Davies. We have a possible sighting. Route 17, near the old abandoned quarry. A child matching Chris’s description.”

A collective breath was held. Miller’s eyes snapped to the radio, his heart giving a jarring lurch. “Repeat that, Davies. Clarity, please.”
