The fluorescent lights of the precinct buzzed with a weary hum, a stark contrast to the frantic energy that had gripped the small town for what felt like an eternity. Detective Miller, his tie loosened and his eyes etched with fatigue, stared at the grainy photograph on his monitor. It was a composite, cobbled together from the fragmented memories of a gas station attendant on the edge of town – a man with a nondescript face, a slightly too-eager smile, and a vehicle that was as unremarkable as it was difficult to trace. This man, according to the attendant, had been seen with a boy matching Chris’s description, heading west, towards Oakhaven.
Oakhaven. It was an hour’s drive, a town that had always felt like a forgotten echo in the bustling rhythm of their own community. It was a place of quiet streets, rundown diners, and a general air of being overlooked. But now, it was a beacon, a flicker of possibility in the suffocating darkness that had descended upon Sarah and David.
Miller picked up the phone, his fingers finding the familiar numbers of David’s mobile. He let it ring twice before David’s voice, tight with a forced calm, answered. “Miller.”
