And he smiled at the boy. A real smile, like he knew him.”

Miller grunted, the sound a low rumble in the otherwise silent interrogation room. Quiet. Knowing. These were the words that snagged at him, pulling him deeper into the unsettling stillness of Chris’s disappearance. It wasn’t the frantic, panicked grab of a predator. It felt more like a carefully orchestrated departure, a subtle redirection of a child’s path.
