The air in the small sheriff’s office felt thick, heavy with the scent of stale coffee and unspoken anxieties. Detective Miller, a man whose face seemed permanently etched with the weariness of a thousand solved and unsolved cases, sat hunched over a worn wooden desk. Spread before him were photographs of Chris – a bright-eyed boy with a mop of unruly brown hair, captured in various moments of childhood innocence. Each image was a stark reminder of the void that had ripped through the heart of Oakhaven.

Sarah sat opposite him, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Her eyes, once sparkling with life, were now hollowed, shadowed by sleepless nights and an all-consuming dread. David stood behind her, a silent, solid presence, his own gaze fixed on the scattered documents, his jaw tight.

“We’ve been digging into the man seen with Chris,” Miller began, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the quiet. He tapped a finger on a grainy photograph, a blurry figure that offered little in the way of identification. “Not much to go on yet. A description, a fleeting glimpse. But there’s… something.”
