The stale, recycled air of the tunnels felt thicker than usual, each breath a gritty reminder of the lie I’d lived. Melissa’s face, etched in my memory with the clarity of a sun-drenched dream, swam before my eyes. Her laughter, a melody lost to the perpetual twilight of our lives, echoed in the hollow spaces of my heart. But the sweetness of her memory was curdling, turning to a bitter poison in the face of what I now knew. Betrayal. The word itself was a jagged shard, piercing the fragile shell of my existence.
It wasn’t just the gnawing hunger, the threadbare clothes, or the constant ache in my bones from ceaseless labor. It was the knowledge that this was by design. We, the Reds, toiled in the dark, our lives a sacrifice, while above us, a world bloomed. A world of sunlight, of green, of a life I’d only glimpsed in forbidden whispers and the fevered dreams of the dying. The Golds. They lived. They feasted. They breathed free air, all on the stolen breath of our existence.
The foreman’s heavy boots echoed down the corridor, a familiar sound that now sent a jolt of pure, unadulterated loathing through me. He was a Red, like us, but a tool. A shepherd for the flock, driving us deeper into the earth, deeper into our servitude. He stopped before my mining unit, his face a mask of forced authority.
