Chapter 19
The Reckoning Approaches
With his influence solidified, John prepares to initiate the final phase of his plan, setting the stage for a confrontation that will shake Mars.
The air in my chambers, once a sterile, recycled breath, now felt thick with anticipation, a palpable hum that vibrated beneath my skin. It had been months since I’d shed the grime of the mines, months since Lyra’s steady hand had guided me through the transformations that had remade me. The rough-hewn miner, John, was a ghost, a memory I kept locked away, a painful amulet worn close to the heart. In his place stood ‘Kaelen,’ a name that tasted of polished steel and ambition, a name that opened doors within the gilded cage of the Golds.
My chambers were a testament to their decadence. Silken hangings draped walls that would have been bare rock in my old life. Light, not the harsh, utilitarian glow of the tunnels, but a soft, diffused luminescence, bathed the room in a perpetual twilight. A table, carved from some dark, lustrous wood I couldn’t identify, held a single, intricately crafted decanter and two crystal glasses. The scent of some exotic, floral perfume, alien and cloying, hung in the air, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of the deep mines.
I ran a hand over the smooth, cool surface of the table. Elias Vance had summoned me. It was always Vance. He was the serpent in this gilded garden, his ambition a coiled threat that I had learned to dance around, to anticipate, to exploit. He had taken a liking to Kaelen, the sharp-witted administrator with an uncanny knack for efficiency and a seemingly insatiable thirst for knowledge. He saw a reflection of himself, perhaps, or a useful tool to be honed and wielded. He was wrong about the latter. I was the whetstone, and he was about to be sharpened to a fatal edge.
