The chill of the Gold City was not the biting cold of the deep mines, but a sterile, pervasive emptiness that seeped into the bones. It clung to the polished obsidian walls, whispered through the impossibly high, vaulted ceilings, and settled in the air like a fine, invisible dust. I breathed it in, this alien atmosphere, and it tasted of lies and forgotten promises. My new name, Kaelen, felt like a borrowed skin, ill-fitting and temporary, a shield I hoped would hold against the wolves.

My chambers were vast, a mockery of the cramped bunks I had known my entire life. A window, impossibly clear, offered a vista of the sprawling metropolis – towers that scraped the crimson sky, shimmering with captured sunlight, crisscrossed by aerial thoroughfares teeming with silent, elegant skimmers. Below, manicured parks bloomed with alien flora, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the muted hues of the Red settlements. It was a paradise built on our sweat, our blood, our stolen lives.

Lyra’s words echoed in my mind, sharp and clear as the crystalline structures that adorned the city’s architecture. “They are not merely rulers, John. They are architects of suffering. Their cruelty is not born of necessity, but of a twisted, ancient pride.” I had seen glimpses of it in the veiled glances of the Golds, in the casual dismissal of any mention of the lower castes, but tonight, I would see it laid bare.
