The air in the administrative sector of Aurum City was thick with the cloying scent of exotic blooms and something else, something metallic and sharp that I’d come to associate with the Golds. It was the smell of privilege, of lives lived untouched by the grime and desperation of the underworld. My own scent, a lingering trace of the subterranean, felt like a brand I had to scrub away with every breath. I’d spent weeks cultivating a persona, a carefully constructed façade of ambition and mild competence, designed to blend seamlessly into the gilded cages of the ruling class. Tonight, the seeds of doubt I’d been planting would begin to sprout.

My chamber, a sterile testament to Gold aesthetics, offered little comfort. The walls shimmered with embedded luminescence, casting a cool, unwavering light. I traced the intricate patterns etched into the obsidian desk, a nervous habit I’d picked up, a small tremor of the Red beneath the polished veneer. Melissa’s face, etched in my memory like a treasured scar, flickered at the edges of my vision. Her laughter, once the sweetest sound in the universe, now felt like a phantom limb, a constant ache of what was lost. I pushed the thought away. Sentiment was a luxury I could no longer afford. It was a weakness the Golds would exploit.

My target tonight was a dinner hosted by Senator Valerius, a man whose ego was as vast as the terraformed plains outside the city’s domed embrace. Valerius was a creature of habit and a connoisseur of gossip, his thirst for both insatiable. He was also, unfortunately for him, a man riddled with insecurities, a fact I’d been meticulously observing.
