The air in the Grand Atrium was thick with the scent of exotic blossoms and the hum of a thousand hushed conversations. It was a symphony of opulence, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of the mines that still clung to my memory like a phantom limb. I moved through the throng, a chameleon in borrowed feathers, my Red origins buried deep beneath layers of fabricated Gold identity. Every glance felt like an accusation, every polite nod a probe. I learned to mimic their effortless grace, their dismissive smiles, their casual cruelty. Each lesson was a step further from the John I once was, a step closer to the weapon they needed me to be.
