The first rays of dawn, still shy and hesitant, painted the Aegis Reach sky in hues of rose and soft gold. They spilled through the high, arched windows of my quarters, nudging me awake with a gentleness that belied the seriousness of my duties. My chambers, though functional and built for command, held a quiet warmth, a sanctuary of sorts before the clamor of the day began. I stretched, the familiar ache in my shoulders a testament to yesterday’s training and the weight of decisions yet unmade. Even in these private moments, the mantle of Commander felt like a second skin, a constant presence. But as I swung my legs over the side of the bed, the image that truly settled my mind was Harper’s.

The scent of brewing herbs, a concoction of mint and something citrusy that Harper insisted was vital for ‘pre-battle alertness’ – even when there was no battle in sight – filled the air. I found her already in the kitchen, a whirlwind of bright fabric and even brighter energy, humming a tune that was probably some ancient sea shanty dressed up in modern nonsense. Her back was to me as she poured steaming liquid into two earthenware mugs.

“Morning, sunshine,” I said, my voice still a little rough with sleep.
