The first tendrils of dawn were just beginning to paint the eastern sky with soft hues of rose and lavender when I finally slipped out of my armor. The familiar weight of it, usually a comforting presence, felt like a shroud after a night spent pacing the ramparts. Aegis Reach was a city built on vigilance, and as its commander, that vigilance was a constant hum beneath my skin. But as I padded barefoot across the cool mosaic tiles of my private quarters, the hum softened, replaced by the gentle warmth of anticipation.

The aroma of brewing coffee, strong and dark, was already wafting from the kitchen, a testament to the early rising of our household staff. I poured myself a mug, the ceramic warm against my palms, and leaned against the granite countertop, watching the light slowly spill over the sleeping city. From this vantage point, nestled high in the Citadel, Aegis Reach looked like a jewel box, its marble buildings gleaming, its winding streets still cloaked in shadow. It was a beautiful sight, a testament to generations of hard work and unwavering dedication. My city. My responsibility.
