The first rays of dawn, still shy and hesitant, painted the eastern sky in hues of rose and pale gold as I stirred. The familiar scent of brewing herbs and freshly baked bread, a comforting ritual of my mornings, drifted from the kitchen. Aegis Reach, my city, my responsibility, was slowly waking, and with it, the weight of command settled onto my shoulders, a familiar cloak I wore with practiced ease. My chambers, though simple, were a sanctuary, a brief respite before the day’s demands began. I ran a hand over the worn leather of my uniform, the cool, smooth texture a grounding sensation. Order, peace, protection – these were the pillars I upheld, the silent vows I’d made to this place and its people.

A soft knock, barely there, announced Harper’s arrival. The door creaked open to reveal her silhouette against the soft light of the corridor, her wild curls a halo around her head, a mischievous grin already playing on her lips. “Morning, Commander,” she drawled, her voice laced with the easy affection that always managed to chip away at my carefully constructed composure. “Reporting for duty, or just here to steal your breakfast?”

I chuckled, the sound warm in the quiet room. “Both, I suspect. Come in, you menace. The bread is still warm.”
