The aroma of roasted figs and honey, a scent as familiar and comforting as my own heartbeat, greeted me as I padded into the kitchen. Sunlight, still shy and golden, slanted through the high windows of my small dwelling, catching dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, forgotten stars. Aegis Reach. Even the name felt like a promise, a shield against the chaos that often simmered at the edges of our world. My responsibilities, a weighty cloak I wore with practiced ease, felt a little lighter in these quiet pre-dawn moments, before the city truly woke and demanded my full attention.
Harper, already a whirlwind of motion, was wrestling with a stubborn jar of fig preserves. Her fiery red hair, usually a chaotic halo, was tamed only slightly by a haphazard braid. "This blasted thing," she grumbled, her voice muffled by effort. "It’s like it’s been sealed by Hades himself."
A smile tugged at my lips. "Perhaps it offended a nymph. Or maybe it just needs a commander’s touch." I walked over, my boots making soft thuds on the stone floor, and with a firm twist, the lid popped open.
