The morning sun, a benevolent eye, cast its golden gaze over Aegis Reach. It painted the marble facades of our city in hues of honey and rose, promising another day of peace. I stood at the window of my private quarters, the cool glass a familiar sensation against my forehead, and watched the city stir. The scent of baking bread, mingled with the faint, sweet perfume of the blooming night jasmine that clung to the outer walls, drifted on the gentle breeze. It was a scent that spoke of home, of quiet mornings before the weight of command settled upon my shoulders.
My hand absently traced the intricate carving on the windowsill, a stylized gryphon, a symbol of vigilance. Even in these quiet moments, the commander in me was always present, a silent guardian watching over the slumbering city. But today, the sharp edges of responsibility felt softened, blurred by the anticipation of shared laughter and the comforting presence of my best friend.
A soft rap sounded at my door, and before I could even call out, it swung open. Harper, her fiery red hair a chaotic halo around her smiling face, bounced into the room, a tray laden with steaming mugs and a plate of honey cakes balanced precariously in her hands.
