The first rays of dawn, still shy and hesitant, painted the Aegis Reach sky in hues of rose and pale gold. I stirred, the familiar weight of my responsibilities settling onto my shoulders even before my eyes fully focused on the opulent tapestries adorning my chambers. The air, still cool from the night, carried the faint scent of sea salt and blooming jasmine, a constant, comforting perfume of home. A quiet strength, honed by years of command, was my usual morning companion, a silent vow to uphold the peace of this city nestled between the cerulean sea and the emerald embrace of the mountains.

But this morning, like most mornings, the weight felt a little lighter, a little less solitary. A soft rustle from the adjoining dressing room, followed by the distinct clatter of a spoon against ceramic, announced her arrival. Harper. My chosen sister, my anchor, my unwavering shadow.

“Morning, Commander,” she drawled, her voice still thick with sleep, as she padded into the main chamber, a steaming mug clutched in her hands. “Or should I say, ‘Good morning, esteemed leader of our glorious city’?” She winked, a mischievous glint already in her bright hazel eyes.
