The first sliver of dawn, a pale, ethereal blush, crept over the peaks of Aegis Reach, painting the rugged landscape in hues of rose and lavender. It was a familiar sight, one I’d witnessed countless times from my chambers, a quiet promise of another day. The air, even at this early hour, carried the faint scent of sea salt and wild thyme, a perfume unique to our city. I stood by the window, the cool stone beneath my bare feet a grounding sensation, and let out a slow breath. The weight of command, a constant companion, settled onto my shoulders, but this morning, it felt a little lighter.

A soft knock, barely a whisper, preceded the creak of my door. Harper, her fiery red hair a chaotic halo in the dim light, peeked her head in. “Still contemplating the existential dread of burnt toast, Commander?” she chirped, her voice already laced with its usual mischief.

I turned, a smile tugging at my lips. “Just appreciating the dawn, Harper. Unlike some, I’m not fueled solely by caffeine and the thrill of impending chaos.”
