The scent of honey and roasted nuts was the first thing that greeted me, a familiar comfort on this crisp Aegis Reach morning. Sunlight, still shy, slanted through the high windows of my home, painting stripes of gold across the polished wood floors. I padded into the kitchen, a small, contented sigh escaping my lips. The city outside was stirring, its usual hum of activity a distant melody, but here, in this quiet space, peace reigned. My peace.
Harper was already there, a whirlwind of motion and bright fabric, humming a tune I didn't recognize as she flipped griddle cakes. Her laughter, like wind chimes caught in a summer breeze, spilled into the room. "Morning, Commander," she chirped, not looking up, her dark braid swinging as she concentrated on her culinary art. "Sleep well? Or were you wrestling mythical beasts in your dreams again?"
I leaned against the doorframe, a smile playing on my lips. "Only the ones that tried to steal my morning coffee, Harper. And they were soundly defeated, as always." I walked over to the table, already set with two plates and steaming mugs. "You’re extra cheerful this morning. Did you finally convince that grumpy old satyr at the western gate to share his secret fig wine recipe?"
