The first rays of dawn, still shy and tentative, painted the Aegis Reach sky in hues of rose and gold. They kissed the marble of the city’s soaring temples and glinted off the meticulously carved facades of homes nestled into the hillsides. It was a morning like any other, and yet, for me, the quiet moments before the clamor of command always held a particular kind of peace. I stood by the hearth in our small, sun-drenched cottage, the scent of woodsmoke and brewing herbs a comforting embrace, and watched the flames dance. The weight of Aegis Reach, its thousands of souls entrusted to my protection, usually settled upon my shoulders like a cloak of lead. But here, in the soft light of morning, with the familiar sounds of Harper rustling in the kitchen, it felt more like a mantle, one I wore with a fierce, quiet pride.

A clatter of ceramic and a cheerful, off-key hum announced Harper’s full emergence into the day. She ambled into the main room, a cascade of dark curls escaping a hasty braid, her eyes still holding the dreamy haze of sleep. She was already dressed, a practical tunic and trousers that did little to hide the vibrant energy that always seemed to thrum beneath her skin.

“Morning, Commander,” she chirped, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she surveyed my quiet contemplation. “Still plotting the downfall of rogue squirrels, I see?”
