The air in the chamber, still thick with the metallic tang of ozone and the faint, acrid scent of scorched stone, felt heavier than usual. It pressed down on Aris, a palpable weight against his chest, making each breath a conscious effort. The Chronos Device, now inert, sat like a sleeping titan in the center of the room, its surface a dull, unreflective obsidian. Its intricate silver filigree, once pulsing with an ethereal blue light, was now merely a cold, elaborate pattern. The silence, after the cacophony of the struggle, was deafening, broken only by the ragged rhythm of his own breathing and Lena's lighter, more even exhalations beside him.

He ran a hand over his face, feeling the grit of ancient dust mingled with sweat. His muscles ached, a deep, persistent throb from the unexpected exertion. The image of Kaelen, eyes blazing with fanatical conviction, still flickered behind his eyelids. The man had fought with a terrifying blend of desperation and conviction, a testament to the depth of his belief in the Keepers’ mission. Aris shivered, remembering the sharp glint of Kaelen’s blade, the wild fury in his eyes as he lunged. It had been a close thing, too close.

Lena, her usually vibrant red hair now a tangled mess, leaned against a moss-covered pillar, her gaze fixed on the device. Her brow was furrowed in a way that suggested not exhaustion, but intense, almost painful contemplation. The grime streaking her cheek did little to diminish the sharp intelligence in her eyes. "It's… real," she murmured, her voice hoarse, a whisper that seemed to echo in the vast space.
