The air in Eldoria had begun to thin, not physically, but atmospherically, as if the very breath of the city was being drawn into a vacuum. Elara felt it in the subtle shifts of light, the way shadows clung to corners a moment too long, or how the distant chimes of the clock tower sometimes echoed twice, out of sync. Professor Aris, meanwhile, grew increasingly agitated, his hair, already a wild white halo, seeming to stand on end with each new anomaly they cataloged. He paced his cluttered study, a whirlwind of ancient maps and half-eaten pastries, muttering about causality and paradoxes under his breath.
"It's accelerating, Elara," he declared one blustery afternoon, gesturing wildly at a half-dozen open tomes scattered across his desk. "The ripples aren't just ripples anymore; they're breaking waves. I saw a man in the market this morning, a fishmonger, selling fish that were… glowing. A faint phosphorescence, mind you, but unmistakable. And when I asked him, he simply shrugged and said they'd 'always been like that.'"
Elara felt a chill that had nothing to do with the draft seeping from the ancient windows. "Always been like that?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "But they haven't, Professor. We both know they haven't."
