The wooden beads, once silent and smooth beneath Elara’s fingers, now hummed with a secret energy. Each tiny sphere seemed to hold a breath, a whisper of the past her grandmother had carried so close to her heart. The symbols, faint and shimmering like heat haze on a summer road, had begun to coalesce, forming shapes that tugged at the edges of Elara’s understanding. Her grandmother, with her quiet prayers and her unwavering faith, had always spoken of the Jesuits with a reverence that Elara, even as a child, had felt.
