Chapter 5
The Keeper of Lore
Seeking guidance, Elara visits the local library and meets Mr. Kazys, a kind librarian with a deep knowledge of Vilnius's history, especially the Jesuits.
The scent of aged paper and beeswax polish was Elara’s favorite perfume. It clung to the air in the Vilnius Public Library, a comforting blanket woven from countless stories and forgotten days. Sunlight, thick with dust motes dancing like tiny, golden sprites, slanted through the tall, arched windows, illuminating rows upon rows of slumbering books. Elara, clutching the wooden beads in her pocket, felt a familiar tremor of shyness. The library was a vast ocean, and she, a small, quiet boat, unsure of where to steer. But the faint, insistent warmth from the beads, a secret she carried close to her heart, urged her forward.
Her grandmother’s words echoed in her mind: “When you are lost, seek the keepers of lore, child. They know the paths where shadows linger and light can be found.” And here, in this hushed temple of knowledge, surely a keeper resided.
Her eyes scanned the polished oak circulation desk. Behind it sat a gentleman with kind eyes that crinkled at the corners when he smiled, and a silver beard that flowed like a gentle stream. He was meticulously arranging a stack of books, his movements slow and deliberate, as if each volume held a fragile secret. This, Elara thought, must be a keeper.
