Chapter 14
The Trail of Clues
Following a trail of subtle clues left by her grandmother and the Jesuit order, Elara moves closer to the artifact's hidden location.
Elara traced the worn grooves of the wooden beads, each one a tiny, smooth promise against her fingertips. They felt familiar, like a forgotten song hummed just out of earshot. Her grandmother’s hands, warm and steady, had often held these very beads, her lips moving in silent prayer. Now, they were Elara’s, a tangible link to a past she was only just beginning to understand. The faint glow that had first appeared a few days ago, a shy shimmer in the dim light of her room, had become more insistent. It pulsed now, a gentle heartbeat emanating from the smooth, dark wood, and with each pulse, a symbol, faint as a sigh, would bloom and fade on the surface of a bead.
She had spent hours poring over the old books Mr. Kazys had lent her, her brow furrowed in concentration. The symbols were unlike anything she’d seen in her schoolbooks, or even in the dusty tomes of Vilnius’s grandest libraries. They spoke a language of curves and lines, of dots and dashes, a secret script whispered from one generation to the next. Mr. Kazys, with his kind eyes and the scent of old paper that clung to him like a second skin, had been patient. He’d shown her ancient alphabets, forgotten monastic codes, and the intricate symbolism of early Christian art. But these symbols… these were different. They felt personal, intimate, as if they were meant for her eyes alone.
“It’s like a treasure hunt, isn’t it, Elara?” Mr. Kazys had said, his voice a soft rumble. He’d been watching her, his gaze gentle, as she’d traced a particularly complex symbol on a bead. “Your grandmother was a wise woman. She knew that some secrets are best revealed slowly, like a flower unfurling in the sun.”
