The air in the café hung thick with the scent of burnt sugar and stale coffee, a familiar comfort that usually soothed Elara’s frayed nerves. Today, however, it did little to penetrate the icy dread that had begun to coil in her stomach. Across the small, chipped table sat Astrid Shumba, her gaze sharp and unnervingly direct, like a falcon assessing its prey. Elara had agreed to meet her, a desperate attempt to understand the unsettling unease that had shadowed Silas’s every move, an unease Astrid seemed to embody.
Astrid’s hands, adorned with rings that glinted dully in the weak afternoon sun, were clasped tightly on the table. Her lips, painted a defiant, dark berry, were pressed into a thin line. She hadn’t spoken for what felt like an eternity, letting the silence stretch and warp, a deliberate tactic Elara recognized with a sinking heart. It was a silence that demanded confession, a silence that promised revelation.
“You don’t know him, Elara,” Astrid finally said, her voice a low murmur, barely audible above the clatter of ceramic cups and the distant hum of traffic. It wasn't an accusation, but a statement of fact, delivered with a weariness that seemed to stretch back through years of hardship.
