The First Crack
A heated argument between Elara and Liam exposes the cracks in their foundation. Liam, sensing Elara's withdrawal, confronts her, unaware of the true source of her distraction.
The silence in the kitchen was a thick, suffocating blanket, heavier than the humid evening air pressing against the windows. Elara traced the condensation on her water glass, each swirl a miniature galaxy in her mind, a distraction from the storm brewing inside her. Liam’s footsteps, usually a comforting rhythm, now sounded like accusations echoing on the polished floorboards. He stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed against the dimmer light of the hallway, his expression a carefully constructed mask of concern that Elara saw right through.
“You’re quiet tonight,” he said, his voice low, an attempt at casualness that fell flat.
Elara offered a tight smile, her gaze still fixed on the glass. “Just tired, Liam. Long day.”
