Silas's charm begins to feel more like a calculated performance. Elara starts to question the sincerity of his affections, noticing inconsistencies and evasive answers.
The afternoon sun, usually a balm on Elara’s skin, felt almost accusatory today. It cast long, probing shadows across the worn wooden table where she sat opposite Silas. They were in their usual spot, the secluded corner booth at "The Rusty Kettle," a place that had become their sanctuary, their clandestine haven. But today, the familiar comfort felt thin, brittle, like a facade that was beginning to crack.
Silas, ever the picture of effortless grace, was recounting a story about his travels, his voice a low murmur that had once mesmerized her. He spoke of bustling marketplaces in distant lands, of ancient ruins bathed in moonlight, painting vivid landscapes with his words. Yet, Elara found herself not lost in the imagery, but dissecting the brushstrokes. There was a practiced cadence to his tales, a polish that felt less like genuine recollection and more like a meticulously rehearsed performance.
“And the scent of saffron, Elara,” he’d said, his eyes, the colour of a storm-tossed sea, meeting hers, “it was intoxicating. It clung to everything, a promise of spice and adventure.”
