Chapter 5
A Shadow from the Past
Astrid, a woman with a knowing gaze, appears, her cryptic words hinting at Silas's hidden past and casting a subtle shadow of doubt over the burgeoning romance. Elara feels a prickle of apprehension.
The air in the market square had always held a certain comfort for Elara, a familiar blend of ripening fruit, damp earth, and the faint, sweet scent of wilting roses from Mrs. Mabhena’s stall. They were the colour of a stormy sea, deep and unsettling, and when they finally settled on Elara, a shiver traced its way down her spine. It wasn’t a hostile look, not exactly, but it was a look that saw too much, a look that held a history Elara couldn’t fathom.
The woman approached, her steps measured, her presence commanding a quiet space in the bustling square. Elara felt a blush creep up her neck, a foolish, inexplicable reaction. “Are you Elara Zaka?” the woman’s voice was low, a velvet rumble that seemed to vibrate in Elara’s bones.
