Liam, bless his unwavering loyalty, had been a constant, a gentle, persistent hum against the roaring silence. He’d brought her soup, offered quiet companionship, and tried, with all his might, to mend the ragged edges of their fractured relationship. But even his presence felt like a ghost, a pale imitation of the vibrant, consuming passion she had briefly, foolishly, experienced.

Tonight, he sat across from her at the worn kitchen table, his gaze fixed on the chipped Formica, his usual easy smile replaced by a deep, unfamiliar furrow in his brow. Elara traced the condensation ring from her water glass, the coolness a stark contrast to the heat that still simmered beneath her skin whenever she dared to recall Silas’s touch.

“Elara,” Liam began, his voice rough, hesitant. He cleared his throat, the sound unnaturally loud in the stillness. “We need to talk. Properly.”
