The air in Elara’s small apartment hung thick with the acrid scent of unspoken words and the lingering ghost of Liam’s departure. He was gone, a gaping void where his steady presence had once been, leaving behind only the echo of slammed doors and the cold, hard reality of his accusations. She traced the rim of a chipped mug, the ceramic rough beneath her fingertip, a familiar comfort in the disarray. Liam’s words, sharp and precise, replayed in her mind: “You were never truly here, Elara. Not with me. You were always looking for something else, someone else.” And he was right. God, he was right.

Her gaze drifted to the window, to the sliver of bruised twilight bleeding into the sky. It was there, in the fading light, that she first saw him, a silhouette against the ordinary backdrop of Elmwood’s quiet street. Silas. The name itself felt like a whispered incantation, a potent spell that had ensnared her from the moment he’d stepped off the bus, a stranger with eyes that held the depth of ancient secrets.

Liam’s departure had been a brutal amputation, severing a limb she’d grown accustomed to, even if it had begun to ache with a silent, gnawing dissatisfaction. The pain was real, a dull throb that radiated through her chest, but beneath it, a different kind of ache persisted. A yearning. A desperate, foolish hope that Silas, the enigma who had so effortlessly breached the carefully constructed walls of her life, might be the answer she’d been searching for.
