The air in their shared apartment, once thick with the comfortable hum of routine and unspoken affection, now crackled with an almost tangible tension. It was a fragile silence, the kind that precedes a storm, and Elara knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, that the tempest had finally arrived. Liam sat opposite her at the kitchen table, his usual easy posture replaced by a rigid stillness. His eyes, once the warm, familiar pools she’d found solace in, now held a depth of hurt that mirrored the chasm that had opened between them.
“Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble, devoid of its usual warmth. It was a sound that twisted something deep inside her, a painful reminder of what she was about to shatter. “We need to talk.”
The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. She had rehearsed this conversation a thousand times in her mind, each iteration ending in a different permutation of pain. Yet, standing here, facing the tangible evidence of his disillusionment, the words felt inadequate, flimsy shields against an onslaught of raw emotion.
