Kael watched Elara from the edge of the whispering woods, his heart a tangled knot of worry and a strange, burgeoning respect. He’d followed her, a silent shadow, ever since she’d slipped away from the village at dawn, her face set with a determination he hadn’t seen before. He’d always thought her peculiar, this girl with the star mark that seemed to hold a light of its own, but now, seeing her move with such purpose towards the ancient ruins, a flicker of something akin to understanding ignited within him.

The villagers spoke of Elara’s mark in hushed tones, a mark of strangeness, of being apart. Kael had never been one for gossip, but he’d felt the same unease, the same distance that set Elara apart. He’d dismissed it as a child’s fancy, a young girl’s overactive imagination. But the whispers of the ruins, the tales Elder Maeve sometimes let slip, had begun to weave their own spell, and now, watching Elara, he felt a pull he couldn’t explain.

He stepped out from behind the gnarled oak, his boots crunching softly on the dry leaves. Elara, startled, spun around, her eyes wide. Her hand instinctively went to her forehead, as if to shield the celestial emblem that seemed to pulse faintly in the morning sun.
