The wind, once a playful companion that rustled through the village with tales of distant lands, now carried a chilling whisper. It snaked through the narrow lanes, tugging at loose shutters and sighing through the eaves like a mournful spirit. Elara felt it deep in her bones, a coldness that had nothing to do with the changing seasons. It was the creeping touch of the Shadow Weaver, Elder Maeve had warned her, a presence that fed on forgotten light and grew stronger with every seed of doubt sown.

The village, usually a bustling hive of activity, seemed to have fallen under a pall. Laughter was muted, conversations hushed, and a general air of weariness clung to the faces of her neighbours. Even the vibrant colours of the market stalls seemed dulled, as if a fine layer of grey dust had settled upon everything. Elara saw it in the way old Man Hemlock shuffled his feet, his usual jovial greeting replaced by a sigh. She saw it in the way young Lyra, who usually chased butterflies with unbridled glee, now sat listlessly by the well, her eyes vacant.

Her own birthmark, usually a quiet, comforting presence on her forehead, felt restless. It pulsed with a faint warmth, a counter-current to the encroaching chill. Sometimes, when the shadows deepened particularly around the edges of the forest, she could almost feel a prickling sensation, as if unseen eyes were watching, waiting.
