Kael watched Elara from the edge of the whispering woods, his brow furrowed. The sun, a pale disc behind a veil of haze, cast long, distorted shadows across the village. He’d seen her many times, a solitary figure drawn to the crumbling stones at the edge of their valley, the very place the elders warned children away from with hushed, fearful voices. Most villagers, caught in the mundane rhythm of their days, paid her no mind. She was just Elara, the quiet girl with the odd mark on her forehead, the one who sometimes hummed tunes no one else remembered. But Kael, a man who prided himself on seeing what was real, what could be touched and understood, couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Elara than met the eye.

Today, she was closer to the ruins than he’d ever seen her. Her small hands traced the weathered carvings on a fallen pillar, her head tilted as if listening to a secret whispered by the ancient stones. A shiver, not entirely from the crisp autumn air, traced its way down Kael's spine. He’d always been a pragmatist, his world built on the solid ground beneath his feet and the predictable turn of the seasons. The old stories, the ones about sky-patterns and earth-songs, were just that – stories, meant to soothe restless children or fill the silence on long winter nights. Yet, as he watched Elara, a strange luminescence seemed to flicker around her, a faint pulse of light that seemed to emanate from her very being, catching the dull sunlight and making it gleam.

He hesitated. His instinct was to turn back, to dismiss it as an illusion born of too much time spent staring at the empty sky. But a deeper, more insistent curiosity tugged at him. He’d known Elara since they were children, a shy, watchful girl who never quite fit in. He’d seen the way other children sometimes teased her about her birthmark, a delicate, star-shaped pattern that seemed to shimmer faintly even in ordinary light. He’d always felt a strange protectiveness towards her, a silent understanding that she carried a burden they couldn't comprehend.
