The air in Oakhaven had always hummed with a certain quietude, a gentle rhythm that Elara had once found comforting. Now, it felt like a held breath, heavy with an unspoken tension. The usual chatter of the marketplace, the distant bleating of sheep, the rhythmic clang of the blacksmith’s hammer – all seemed muted, as if a thin veil had settled over the world. Even the sun, usually a bold, golden orb, appeared to cast a paler, more hesitant light.

Elara, her hand instinctively touching the smooth skin of her forehead where the star-shaped mark rested, felt it too. A prickling unease, like the first shiver of a coming storm. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind: “The world remembers, Elara, even when its people forget. And sometimes, when the memory fades too much, the old shadows stir.”

The “old shadows.” The phrase itself sent a chill down her spine. She’d seen the signs, hadn't she? The crops in Farmer Giles’ field, usually so robust, were wilting despite ample rain, their leaves curling and yellowing with an unnatural speed. The river, which normally flowed with a lively, chattering current, had slowed to a sluggish, murky crawl, its surface disturbingly still. And the birds, oh, the birds. They no longer filled the dawn with their joyous symphony. Instead, a silence had fallen over the canopy, broken only by the occasional, mournful cry of a lone hawk circling high above.
