The first rays of dawn, hesitant and shy, began to paint the eastern sky with washes of rose and lavender. They crept over the slumbering huts of Umuaku, chasing away the last vestiges of the night’s oppressive gloom. It was a dawn unlike any other in recent memory, a dawn that felt tentative, as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting to see if the silence that had fallen upon the forest was real, or merely a cruel trick of the fading darkness.
Ada stood at the edge of the village, her gaze fixed on the treeline. The lantern she had carried through the terrifying depths of the forest now sat cool and dark beside her, a silent testament to the battle she had fought. Her heart, which had pounded with a fierce, wild rhythm for so long, now beat with a more measured cadence, a steady drum against the quiet anticipation that had settled over Umuaku. The villagers, usually stirring with the first light to tend their farms and prepare for the day’s market, were emerging from their homes with a hesitant curiosity, their eyes wide, scanning the familiar paths that led to the forest’s edge.
