Sheriff Brody, a corpulent man whose uniform strained against his girth, surveyed the perimeter of his self-imposed blockade. His deputies, a collection of slack-jawed men whose faces were etched with a familiar, ugly blend of fear and malice, milled about the makeshift barricades of felled trees and rusted barbed wire. Their laughter, coarse and unrestrained, drifted on the humid air, a deliberate, venomous sound designed to pierce the fragile defenses of the sanctuary.
“See ‘em, boys?” Brody sneered, his voice a low rumble that carried despite the rustling leaves. “Hiding like rats in a trap. Think they can just carve out their own little kingdom? Not on my watch.” He spat on the parched earth, a gesture of pure contempt. “We’ll starve ‘em out. Break their spirit, piece by piece. Make ‘em wish they’d never set foot on this land.”
Booker, his gaze fixed on the distant glint of metal from the blockade, felt a familiar knot tighten in his gut. He’d seen this before, the casual cruelty of men who wielded power like a cudgel. He understood Brody’s game. It wasn’t just about starving them; it was about the slow, insidious erosion of hope, the seeding of doubt.
