As Booker and Jackie's plan unfolds, the commune holds its breath. The staged provocations work with terrifying efficacy. Sheriff Brody, blinded by his desire to crush the activists, dispatches a significant portion of his force into the swamp, following the false trail. High above, the sky entity senses the amplified fear and the concentrated prey. It begins its descent, a silent, ominous shadow blotting out the sun. The commune watches from their hidden vantage points as the entity drifts lower, its predatory gaze now fixed not on them, but on the approaching, unsuspecting sheriff's deputies. The trap is sprung, and the true horror is about to begin.
The air hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from the swamp’s perpetual humidity and the taut silence of anticipation. Booker, his hands calloused and steady despite the tremor that ran through the commune, watched the sliver of sky visible through the dense canopy. His gaze, usually fixed on the intricate details of a trap or the patient mending of a roof, now scanned the heavens. Beside him, Jackie shifted his weight, his knuckles white where he gripped the worn stock of his hunting rifle. He’d seen the glint of Brody’s men moving through the cypress knees, a creeping blight of khaki and malice.
“They’re taking the bait,” Jackie breathed, his voice a low rasp. “Just like you said, Booker. Brody’s too proud to let us have the last laugh.”
Booker nodded, a flicker of grim satisfaction in his eyes. “Pride is a blindfold, Jackie. And Brody wears it tighter than any man I’ve ever known.” He glanced at his sister, Coco, who stood a little apart, her gaze not on the approaching threat, but on the sky. There was a strange, almost mournful intensity in her stare, as if she were communing with something ancient and terrible. He worried about her, about the weight of what they were asking her to observe, to endure.
