The smell of burnt toast was Georgie Draper’s olfactory signature. It wasn't a deliberate choice, mind you. It was more of an occupational hazard, a constant companion in his life, much like the stray sock that perpetually went missing from his laundry or the nagging suspicion that he’d left the gas on. Today, however, the aroma wasn’t emanating from his own perpetually smoky kitchen. It wafted from the small, slightly lopsided cake he’d attempted to bake for Eleanor’s birthday. The top was a landscape of charcoal, while the inside, he suspected, retained the texture of raw dough.

“It’s… rustic, Georgie,” Eleanor said, her voice a carefully modulated blend of affection and sheer, unadulterated bewilderment. She eyed the culinary disaster with the same practiced patience she’d honed over decades of Georgie-induced predicaments. Her lips twitched, a telltale sign that beneath the veneer of polite acceptance, a chuckle was brewing.

Georgie beamed, oblivious. “Rustic! I like that, El. A real artisanal touch. You know, I was going for that ‘just pulled from a medieval hearth’ vibe. Very authentic.” He gestured grandly with a spatula, narrowly missing a framed photograph of a younger, considerably less singed-looking Georgie attempting to juggle three oranges.
