The air in the small, secluded cove tasted of salt and secrets, the kind that clung to the skin like sea mist. Elara traced the rough grain of the driftwood beneath her fingers, the cool, damp wood a stark contrast to the warmth that had taken root in her heart. Beside her, Liam’s presence was a steady anchor, a silent reassurance against the tempest of the past few weeks. The ultimatum had hung over them like a thundercloud, heavy with the weight of their parents’ entrenched animosity. It had felt like standing on the edge of a precipice, the chasm between their families a gaping maw threatening to swallow them whole.

“I can’t believe we’re here,” Elara whispered, her voice barely disturbing the gentle rhythm of the waves lapping at the shore. “After everything.”

Liam turned to her, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, reflecting the muted sunlight.
